In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being as a global metric to end widening economic and social inequalities contributing to poor healthcare by 2030, making sure to focus on rapid urbanization, threats to the climate and environment, and social protection hindering people’s health and life expectancy. As of 2017, the following were the statistics globally:
· 400 Million people have no basic healthcare
· 1.6B people live in fragile settings that hinder healthcare
· Every 2 seconds someone aged 30-70 die prematurely due to lack of care
· 7 Million people die every year due to pollutants in the air
· 1 in 3 women have experiences sexual or physical violence at least once in their life
To address these statistics the United Nations brought member countries together and the following 2030 targets were agreed to:
· Reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births
· Reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births
· Reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being
· Achieve universal health coverage
· Half the number of deaths due to traffic accidents
· Integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs
· Support research and development of vaccines
I have been implementing global development programs for the past 25+ years. Healthcare is a real and significant concern globally. During the COVID crisis, those who did not have access to healthcare, or economic means to access the care needed, it was a bleak outcome. This left more children orphaned, and immune systems comprised in places where healthcare and/or medicine either does not exist or is minimal and accessed by few.
